We had a great time sharing our wonderful shea butter products at the 2011 Natural Products Expo East in Baltimore this past week.

Color variations in natural products are to be expected, after all God creates everything in nature uniquely. So we expect to see some variations in unrefined shea butter based on geographical regions, rainfall, variations in soil and temperatures. The color variations I am most concerned about are those that are within our ability to manage and this is more an issue of processing than nature.

My brother came back from beach vacation with sun burned skin because he didn’t see the need for sunscreen. Local Buying Agents or LBAs have played a critical role in the downgrading of shea butter quality standards. LBA’s typically act as middlemen between the shea producer, other LBAs and ultimately the large multinational companies. These companies ship shea butter and shea nuts to Europe or Asia for refining. Quality shea butter does not appear to be a priority with the LBA’s.

As we wrapped up the shea butter training sessions in Nigeria, I asked myself why a small and growing business like ours had to invest so much of our precious time and resources in training Shea producers on shea producing techniques in spite of the fact that these communities have been producing shea for centuries. In the process of asking these questions I learned a few things about the state of the shea butter industry and the role this poor quality shea butter has played in keeping women in poverty.
